An eye-opening book about caregivers

Not everyone is born a natural caregiver.

One moment, digital journalist Joy Johnston is a cynical workaholic with an underwater mortgage. The next moment, she faces the responsibility of caring for her eccentric mother who’s battling colon cancer, just six months after her father’s death from Alzheimer’s. As an only child, she has no choice but to slap on the latex gloves, and get to know more about her mother — and herself — than she ever imagined possible.

The road from reluctance to resilience is bumpy and splattered with bodily fluids, but it also offers unforgettable lessons. Who knew you could learn how to change a colostomy bag on YouTube, or that hospice nurses like telling dirty jokes? Peppered with snarky humor, vivid observations, and poignant honesty, this essay collection will resonate with anyone drafted into a family health crisis.

Recommended romantic reading: The Harpist

Note (caution) to readers – This book touches on three topics that are uncomfortable to many. The first is abuse and how some women can be lured into an abusive relationship then become so caught up in it that they can’t (or won’t) try to escape it; they continue to go back for more despite the fact that their life might even be in danger. It’s actually more common than many think and, as the author, I wanted to address this subject in the hope that even one woman will recognize herself and get out of the situation. The second subject is another that few authors introduce into a “romance” novel, and that is mental illness, but I felt this is also a more common than realized subject that many have to cope with. The last, and sometimes uncomfortable subject, is that of forgiveness related to infidelity…is it a weakness or a strength? If any of these subjects are not your cup of tea, you may not want to read this book, but if you want to feel the drama and see how they play out in a dark and intense story, you will want to read this book.

Young and naïve, Brianna Campbell, has dreams of becoming a professional harpist and when she’s accepted by a prestigious music academy in Edinburgh, Scotland after high school graduation, she leaves the family farm in Ohio with high hopes.

Once there, however, she becomes the target of Malcolm McGarity, a famous rock musician who has returned to his hometown of Edinburgh, worn out and bored with his lifestyle, nights of partying and loose women. Once he sets his sights on the beautiful and innocent harp student, he determines to have her despite the warning of his longtime friend and fellow musician, Gerry Ferguson, to keep away.

Gerry, who had lesser success as a musician and who has left the music scene, works at the Academy where his sister, Fiona, is a student. It doesn’t take long before Gerry falls in love with Brianna and warns her away from his narcissistic friend, believing he will only destroy her as he has so many others.

Who will Brianna choose?

The wealthy, charming, and devastatingly attractive Malcolm, who woos her with red roses and fairytale promises…or kind and caring Gerry who has nothing more to offer her than his heart?

Review

The Secret Life of Mrs. London is a heart-wrenching portrait of a marriage between two people who utterly depend on one another, but ultimately aren’t enough for each other. With skillful precision of language, Rosenberg weaves a narrative that defines the complexities of love, passion, and art. This is a perceptive, deeply moving novel by a great new talent about a couple who has gone unnoticed in historical fiction until now. Anyone who has ever loved another person will want to read this book.” —Victoria Kelly, author of Mrs. Houdini: A Novel

“One of Houdini’s best kept secrets was his affair with Charmian London in 1918. Now Rebecca Rosenberg tells the story using an elegant blend of fact and fiction, creating a Houdini book like no other. The Secret Life of Mrs. London is a true peek behind the curtain and a page-turner.” —John Cox, Wild about Harry
